Making Your Drone Pics and Vids Legit (For Any Industry)

August 12, 2017

Having gone through the process of drone pilot certification with the FAA, I have learned so much about the troubles and dangers of not doing your due diligence. And for those who are getting their pics and vids "from their guy", you could be on the hook if they aren't legit. There has been a lot of ambiguity and shoulder shrugging when it came to using drones for your business. This goes for any business no matter what business you're in! From wedding photographers to real estate agents to insurance adjusters, getting a unique perspective from a bird's-eye view can really set your business apart. However, as a business owner, if you or someone that works for you is flying commercially without drone pilot certification under 14 CFR part 107, your are breaking the law. If you are subbing out work from another vendor, you must be persistent on asking for the proper credentials.

On top of drone certification, that may not be enough where you intend to fly. You or your pilot also needs to have the proper airspace authorizations and/or waivers for things like flying at night thirty minutes after sunset, flying over people, flying over 400 feet above ground level, etc. There is an enormous responsibility with running a business that involves drones. Make sure your operator or business has the proper insurance.
